1. A-Class

– A 160 CDI (2012 – 2018) – OM607 – 1.5-liter diesel

Mercedes first released a Renault engine on the A-Class in 2012 with the A 160 d and A 180 d.
These were equipped with the 1.5 dCi four-cylinder diesel engine developed in cooperation with Renault.
Its codename is ‘OM607’, and depending on the configuration, it puts out between 75 and 110 horsepower. Some drivers would argue the Mercedes A-Class is underpowered because of these engines.
In 2018, Mercedes released the A-Class with a new generation of the OM607 Renault engine. The A 160 d and A 180 d were now powered by the OM608 diesel engine, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit producing between 95 and 116 horsepower.
Mercedes also used a Renault-developed petrol motor in the A-Class (A160, A180, and A200), starting in 2018 with the 1.3-liter inline-four codenamed ‘M282.’
While the Mercedes A180 and A200 look identical at first sight, there are a few key differences between them. (And the same goes for the Mercedes A250!)
The M282 was the first engine offered by Mercedes that offered cylinder deactivation and an engine particulate filter.

For the Mercedes B-Class, the story is equal to the A-Class.
Mercedes used the same OM607, OM608, and M282 engines co-developed by Renault on the B 160, B 180, B 200, and B250e models as in the same A-Class models.

Are Renault engines in Mercedes models any good?
It’s no secret that Mercedes-Benz models are some of the most popular luxury vehicles on the market.
But what might come as a surprise is that some models are powered by engines developed by Renault.
While some car enthusiasts turn their noses up at the thought of a French engine powering a German car, others claim that they’re just as good as their Mercedes counterparts.
We just recommend avoiding the earlier 1.5-liter diesel engine (OM607), as there are some stories of it having issues in the early product stages. Luckily, Renault sorted these out quickly, as the later versions have very few specific problems.
Why does Mercedes use Renault engines?
Even though most Mercedes-Benz engines are manufactured in-house by Daimler AG and Mercedes-AMG, some engines are sourced from Renault.
The story of Mercedes using Renault motors started in 2010 when Daimler (the parent company of Mercedes-Benz) entered a ‘strategic agreement’ and acquired a stake of 3.1% in Renault and 3.1% in Nissan. (Source)
In return, the Renault-Nissan alliance got a stake of 3.1% in Daimler.
The agreement enabled the sharing and co-development of petrol and diesel engines, allowing companies to reduce costs and increase economies of scale. It resulted in the development and sharing of the Mercedes OM607, OM608, OM622, and M282 engines.

Hi ,
Personally I think you buy a brand it should be developed manufactured and perfected in the most by that brand ,
I think using other brands and then badging as another brand should be illegal as it is misleading to the purchaser of said purchased brand . I.e fake.
In any other area of branding this is tantamount to counterfeit or fake goods .
Example ,you buy a new Mercedes because you’ve had a long history of ownership of Mercedes vehicles ,you like the engineering and build quality you’ve always enjoyed ,then you lift the bonnet on your new vehicle to do your checks looking after it and unbeknown to you there is a Renault under there ,I would not be a happy customer ,i fact I would be looking to return it in my cooling off period
Many thanks ,
Hey there!
Thank you so much for giving your view on this! I definitely understand that for some people, it may feel disappointing to find a Renault engine under the hood of your brand-new Mercedes, especially if you didn’t know this when buying the car. So I hope that our article will help to bring more awareness about this fact!
Have a great rest of your day!

I have a Mercedes benz vito 111 2015 with Renault engine this is nonsense car i don’t want to like. this thing of DPF it is always blocking now and then it has costed me so much. as of now my turbocharger is blown off. Mercedes you made a big mistake on this car
Is Mercedes still using the Renault engine in its cars to this day or did it abandon it
Hi Abdallah,
First of all, thank you for your great question!
And to get straight to the point; yes, Mercedes still uses Renault engines like the M282 1.3-liter petrol to this day.
Please let us know if you’ve any other questions 😊
– Patryk
I’ve only just found out that Renault engines are used. won’t be buying another merc then!!
Hi Allan,
Thanks for your comment. I think it’s important to remember that while certain Mercedes models do use Renault engines, this is not the case for the entirety of the Mercedes lineup. This collaboration is quite limited, focusing primarily on specific, mostly smaller models, with the intention of improving fuel efficiency and reducing production costs.
So if you’re considering another Mercedes in the future, rest assured that there are many options available with classic Mercedes-built engines. It’s always worth conducting a little research on the specific model you’re interested in to confirm the engine origin if that’s a significant factor for you.
Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or concerns!

Hello!
Congrats on your Mercedes Vito 111! It sounds like you’ve got yourself a real workhorse. 200,000 miles is a fair bit, but if it’s been well maintained, it could very well keep going strong for many more miles.
As for the timing chain, it’s a good idea to check the service history or have a mechanic take a look.
Enjoy the drive!

I don’t understand people’s issue with Mercedes models using Renault engines. Besides, Renault engines are of the most reliable in the market, especially their diesel line.
Hey Steve!
Thanks for your comment. Indeed, many people have differing views when it comes to Mercedes models using Renault engines. You’re right in highlighting the reliability of Renault engines, especially their diesel line. Is there anything I need to be aware about in regards to the reliability of the car. Assuming it has a Renault engine.
Feedback would be appreciated!

The 2020 A-Class A200 (W177 generation) is quite reliable. Some of its common issues include condensation in the tail lights, a sunroof that’s not functioning correctly, and oil leaks near the engine’s turbocharger.

I just bought my Daughter a 200D GLA with 40,000 miles, Thinking a Mercedes diesel engine good for 200,000 miles. on a school run no warning the car stopped at 42,000 miles relayed to garage engine sized, Mercedes not Intrested but offered to put a new Renault engine in for just over 10k. What a con, its like buying a Rolex with timex guts. Mercedes just lost another family from ever buying another.
Hi Mark,
I’m really sorry to hear about the trouble you’ve had with the Mercedes 200D GLA. It’s definitely frustrating when a car, especially a brand like Mercedes, doesn’t meet our expectations.
Regarding the offer to replace the engine, it’s understandable why that doesn’t feel right, given the brand and price. It’s a tough situation. The least I can do is to thank you for sharing your experience!
Take care!
– Patryk
Just found out about the Renault engines I have a CLA 200 which is under a year old.
I have contacted Mercedes and asked them to confirm this stating as this wasn’t mentioned when I bought the car it has been mid-sold.
Awaiting a reply before contacting my solicitor.
Hi Joey,
Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like you’ve taken the right steps by reaching out to Mercedes for confirmation. Feel free to keep us updated on how it goes.
